The Streak That Will Not End; The Play That Was Not Counted

September 08, 1986|MARK HEISLER

DENVER — The Streak That Wouldn't Die:

Marcus Allen is the new NFL record-holder for 100-yard rushing games, with 10 straight.

This will come as a surprise to Allen.

He left Mile High Stadium Sunday with his Raider teammates thinking that his streak had been broken. Three hours later, however, the Bronco statistician watched a replay on TV and realized that Allen hadn't been given credit for the four-yard gain on the play on which linebacker Ken Woodard tore the ball away from him.

Thus Allen's total went from 98 to 102 yards and he breaks the record he shared with Walter Payton.
