Long Beach Opera Postpones 'Roger'

September 11, 1986

Long Beach Opera has announced the postponement of Karol Szymanowski's "King Roger," which the company was scheduled to perform in February. According to general director Michael Milenski, the work "is not an easy opera to cast, and it finally became impossible to assemble the necessary singers for this season."

Instead, the company will offer Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos" on March 1, 4, 6 and 8 in the Center Theater of the Long Beach Convention Center. "King Roger" was to have been presented in the larger Terrace Theater. Principal singers for "Ariadne" include Mani Mekler, Constance Hauman and Jon Frederic West. Christopher Alden will be stage director.

Milenski stated that "King Roger" has been rescheduled for February, 1988, with James Johnson in the title role.
