Norwegian police using dogs and tear gas clashed with 1,500 protesters outside Oslo's medieval Akershus Castle minutes before a state dinner for British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Several of the demonstrators were arrested and some were injured. They were protesting Thatcher's policies on South Africa and British industrial emissions that Norway says cause acid rain to fall on the country. In London, the Thatcher government announced an $888-million program to reduce air pollution from three of 12 coal-fired power plants.
