Norwalk Council OKs Compromise on Parking Rules

September 14, 1986

NORWALK — The City Council Monday approved an enforcement policy to regulate parked cars that obstruct sidewalks.

The policy is a compromise between homeowners who have short driveways--causing a car's bumper to hang over a sidewalk--and pedestrians who must walk on the street to get around cars that block their path.

The enforcement policy would allow vehicles that hang over the sidewalk to remain parked in driveways if a pedestrian does not have to enter the street. Cars that force people to walk into the street will be cited on a complaint basis only. The regulation prohibiting parking across a sidewalk will not be enforced on street-sweeping days. Vehicles parked on lawns will be cited except on street-sweeping days.
