The World : U.S. Delays Soviets' Visas

September 17, 1986

The State Department is reviewing visa applications for six Soviet scientists who had been scheduled to arrive in the United States on Sunday to set up seismic stations in Nevada and California to monitor U.S. nuclear tests, a spokesman said. The spokesman did not indicate whether the review was connected with Soviet espionage charges against U.S. reporter Nicholas Daniloff. The Soviet team is part of a joint project with the U.S. Natural Resources Defense Council, a private group that is setting up stations in the Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan to monitor Soviet nuclear tests.
