The World : 87 Soviet Jews Emigrate

September 18, 1986

Eighty-seven Soviet Jews were permitted to leave for the West last month, the highest figure registered this year, a tally by the Intergovernmental Committee for Migration showed in Geneva. The tally was substantially above the 33 departures in July, the smallest number since the all-time low of 29 in August, 1985. Emigre sources said the trend appears to be continuing upward, with more than 60 Jews having left the Soviet Union so far this month. The highest monthly total last year was 174. Soviet Jewish emigration hit a peak of 51,330 in 1979.
