Deukmejian's Stand on Prison in East L.A.

September 20, 1986

I think it is absolutely disgusting the way the governor of this state is fighting to have another prison built in (or near) East Los Angeles. His warning that failure to OK this controversial site could lead to a major prison riot is just plain stupid, scratching the bottom of the barrel.

That L.A. area already has five--repeat, five--prisons, with a population nearly equal to the population of the area. And he wants this without an environmental impact study, which he insisted on before approving a Stockton prison.

There is no doubt in my mind and perhaps in the minds of many others, that this is strictly a discriminatory decision. You can be sure if this were a white, Anglo area, he would fight equally hard, if not even harder, not to have it put there.

And if the senators go along with him it will prove that the are just as bigoted and a lot weaker than he is.

My, my! How low he stoops to conquer.
