Pope Requests Prayers for Interfaith Meeting

September 20, 1986|From Times staff and wire service reports

Pope John Paul II has requested prayers for the success of his interdenominational prayer meeting for world peace next month and warned that humanity needs God's help to avoid the "destruction and death" of global war.

Religious leaders from around the world--including Muslim imams, the Dalai Lama and spirit-worshiping animists--are scheduled to attend the unprecedented meeting Oct. 27 in Assisi, Italy.

The pontiff, speaking to several thousand pilgrims gathered in the courtyard of his summer residence 15 miles south of Rome, said he called the one-day prayer meeting to coincide with the United Nations' declaration of 1986 as the International Year of Peace.
