Sabatini to Miss San Diego Tournament

September 20, 1986

SAN DIEGO — Gabriela Sabatini has withdrawn from next week's Audi Challenge tennis tournament at the Rancho Bernardo Inn because of an injury. She will be replaced by veteran Wendy Turnbull, who upset Hana Mandlikova in this year's U.S. Open.

The eight-woman field includes top seed Pam Shriver, No. 2 seed Bonnie Gadusek, No. 3 Zina Garrison, and No. 4 Stephanie Rehe, who lost to Melissa Gurney in the finals of the San Diego Virginia Slims in August. Elizabeth Smylie, Carling Bassett, Kathy Horvath and Turnbull round out the field. In doubles, Shriver will team with Smylie, Bassett with Garrison, Horvath with Gadusek, and Rehe with Turnbull.

The tournament runs Thursday through Sunday. Singles play starts Thursday with Bassett playing Garrison and Smylie playing Gadusek. Shriver will play Horvath and Rehe will play Turnbull Friday. Matches begin at 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday, at 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday and the final will be at 11 a.m. Sunday.
