Misunderstood

September 28, 1986

I feel cheated by reviewer Sheila Benson, who writes that "Stand By Me" is "the summer's great gift. . ." (see movie listings, Page 37).

In truth, the film teaches incorrect values, profanity; it teaches that it's OK to steal from parents, OK to use a gun to counteract injustice, OK to trespass on people's property as long as you are not bitten by the person's dog; that the way to deal with other people's cruelty is to be more cruel back to them, and so forth.

I hope people will reconsider paying money to see what is basically a boring, foul-mouthed, film that glorifies the worst, not the best, in human nature.
