California Real Estate Principles (third edition, Real Estate Educational Services, 2530 N. Grand, Santa Ana, Calif. 92701, 332 pages, $25 plus $2 shipping and sales tax in California) was written to help prepare applicants for the California Rea Estate salesperson's exam. The new edition has been updated to reflect recent law changes and to include sample forms used by the novice salesperson. It covers all of the subject matter on the Department of Real Estate exams.

Buy Smart! by R. Edward Brown (McGraw-Hill, 212 pages, paperback, $14.95). Subtitled The Complete Home Buyer's Guide to Residential Evaluation. Contains checklists designed to help a home buyer discover hidden structural conditions and estimate costs of repairing, replacing or correcting defects in materials or workmanship.

The Guide to Appraisal Witness Selection by the Society of Real Estate Appraisers (645 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60611; 36 pages, $3 plus $1.50 for postage and handling) Part of the society's Guide series and provides a brief background in appraising, defining an appraisal and its contents; also found in this guide are the "Standards for Professional Practice and Conduct" to which society members must adhere in their professional practice.
