PITTSBURGH — Mobay Corp. has begun production of a high-purity polycarbonate resin for use in the manufacture of compact audio discs and digital storage memories and will build a compact-disc research laboratory in Pittsburgh, the company recently said.

Mobay, a subsidiary of Bayer USA Inc. and Bayer AG of Leverkusen, West Germany, announced that the resin Makrolon CD-2000 is being manufactured at its plant in Baytown, Tex. The plant is expected to produce up to 50 million pounds of the material annually.

Mobay said it will assist disc molders and will establish a new compact-disc research laboratory in Pittsburgh.
