PREP FOOTBALL : Sunny Hills Defense Plays Tough in Win Over Brea

October 11, 1986

Undefeated Sunny Hills High School, behind a rugged defense that held Brea-Olinda to 100 yards and had six sacks, ran its record to 5-0 Friday night with a 14-6 win over the Wildcats in a nonleague game at Spaulding Field in Buena Park.

The Lancers' scored on a one-yard dive by fullback Bryan Edmonds with 44 seconds left in the first half and an 11-yard run around left end with a pitch by Juan Ricoy with 2:08 remaining in third period. Carlos Miramontes kicked both extra points.

The only score for the Wildcats (2-3) was by their defense and came midway through the third period when cornerback Steve Teran intercepted a Trevor Painton pass at the Lancer 40 and then scored. The extra point attempt was blocked.

Brea-Olinda accumulated 96 yards on the ground and only 6 passing. The Wildcats' never got any farther than the Sunny Hills 41, but the drive stalled and they were forced to punt. Wildcat quarterback Rich Palacios completed 2 passes in 6 attempts for the 6 yards and 1 interception. He was sacked 6 times, losing 40 yards.

Sunny Hills finished with 159 yards rushing in 48 attempts. Edmonds led the Lancers with 73 yards in 11 carries. Painton, who shared quarterback duties with David Chisolm, was 3 of 4 for 35 yards and 1 interception. Chisolm was 4 of 7 for 62 yards.
