OTHER SPORTS : Northridge, Riverside Battle for CCAA Edge

October 23, 1986

First place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. and the No. 1 spot in the NCAA Division II poll will be on the line when No. 1-ranked Cal State Northridge (21-4 overall, 5-0 in the CCAA) meets No. 2 UC Riverside (13-5, 5-0) in a women's volleyball match Friday night at Riverside.

Cal State Northridge had road victories over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Chapman in the first week of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men's soccer season--significant only because those were the two teams expected to challenge the Matadors for the CCAA title.

CSUN then struggled to a 2-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills and in a scoreless tie with Cal Poly Pomona, ending a six-game winning streak that fell one shy of the school record set in 1984.

The women's volleyball teams at Moorpark and Pierce are part of a four-team battle for first place in the Western State Conference. Moorpark (6-1 overall, 5-1 in conference) trails first-place Santa Barbara City by a half-game. Pierce (6-2, 3-1) trails Moorpark by a game and is a half-game behind Cuesta (10-1, 4-1).

Moorpark's Erin Marsca leads the conference with 66 kills. Teammates Dana Haggen and Elizabeth Tagg are tied for second with 61 each.

Lynn Goldstein, also of Moorpark, is tied with Oxnard's Sonya Covarrubias for the conference lead in services with 17.

Diane Beta of Pierce leads the conference in hitting percentage with 20 kills and only four errors in 40 attempts, a .400 percentage. Tagg of Moorpark is third with a .340 percentage on 150 attempts.
