Community College Roundup : Golden West Upsets Long Beach Again

Jason Jeffries scored four goals and Craig Douglass added three to lead the Golden West College water polo team to an upset of Long Beach City, 10-9, in Huntington Beach. The win moves Golden West into a first-place tie in the South Coast Conference.

It was the second time in six days the Rustlers (10-1, 21-3) have beaten the No. 1-ranked Vikings (10-1, 21-2).

Last Saturday, the Rustlers defeated the Vikings, 9-7, in the Cypress Tournament championship for Long Beach City's first conference loss of the season.

In Orange Empire Conference water polo:

Orange Coast 18, Grossmont 8--Karl Stewart scored five goals, Eric Keller four and Chuck Leatherman three as the Pirates (12-0, 22-4) clinched a tie for the Orange Empire Conference title in El Cajon. OCC needs only one win, against either Saddleback or Palomar, to take the title.

Rancho Santiago 12, Saddleback 8--Greg Clark scored four goals and John O'Neil added four to led the Dons (8-4, 16-5) in Mission Viejo. J.D. Dennis and Eric Long Scored two goals each for the Gauchos (11-2, 17-5-1).

Palomar 14, Cypress 10--Despite four goals by Steve Plumb, the Chargers (0-12, 3-22) lost at home.

In Orange Empire Conference men's soccer:

Cypress 4, Victor Valley 1--Dave Chi scored two goals, Tarek Hilal and Ibrahim Shedadeh one each for the Chargers (2-4-1, 3-8-2) in the win at Cypress. Victor Valley is 0-6-1, 2-9-2.

In South Coast Conference men's soccer:

Fullerton 2, Cerritos 2--Marc Merino and Cyrus Hosseini scored to put the Hornets (3-3-1) ahead, 2-0, but Raul Avellaneda and Willie Ayala countered for the Falcons (3-3-1). Neither team scored in the second half.

El Camino 4, Golden West 0--El Camino College defeated Golden West at El Camino.

El Camino got goals from Dominic Militello, Julio Villacorta, Peter Ristovski and Philip Dassise. Golden West's record fell to 3-3-1 and 8-6-1.

In South Coast Conference women's soccer:

Golden West 3, Long Beach City 1--Shannon Augustine scored two goals and Nini Berbiglia one for the Rustlers (6-1-2, 10-3-2) at Huntington Beach.

In South Coast Conference volleyball:

Golden West 3, Long Beach City 0--The Rustlers (4-3, 7-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 15-3, 15-6, 15-7 win over the Vikings at Huntington Beach. Sophomore Kathy Wissman had nine kills and four blocks and teammate Dionne Powers had eight kills and three blocks for Golden West.

In Orange Empire Conference volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Riverside 0--Setter Kim Rochow had seven aces and 31 assists and Ann Javage scored 15 kills as the Pirates (4-0, 8-2) won 15-9, 15-13, 15-3 in Costa Mesa. It was OCC's seventh consecutive win.

Cypress 3, Saddleback 2--Lisa Johnson had 11 kills and 9 blocks as the Chargers (1-3) defeated the Gauchos (0-4), 15-10, 15-13 8-15, 9-15, 15-7.
