Guard Jeff Bregel of USC and linebackers Brian Bosworth of Oklahoma and Cornelius Bennett of Alabama were among the 13 nominees for the 1986 Lombardi Award, which is presented to the nation's top collegiate lineman.

Other defensive linemen nominated were Chris Spielman of Ohio State, Jerry Ball of SMU, Jerome Brown of Miami, Jason Buck of Brigham Young, Jeff Drost of Iowa, Reggie Rogers of Washington, nose guard Tony Cherico of Arkansas and middle guard Danny Noonan of Nebraska.

Besides Bregel, two other offensive linemen were nominated--tackle John Clay of Missouri and center Ben Tamburello of Auburn.
