Rolling Hills Council Delays Tree Removal

November 02, 1986

ROLLING HILLS — The City Council has delayed approval of a program to remove 19 trees and repair curbs, gutters and sidewalks in the Rollingwood area until residents in the neighborhood can be notified and polled for comments.

Sidewalks in Rollingwood on Blue Mound Road, Elmdale Drive, Rockbluff Drive and Willow Wood Road, as well as others in the city, have been damaged by ficus tree roots growing under the concrete, according to a report by Assistant City Manager Douglas R. Pritchart.

However, the Rollingwood area has been identified by the city as the most severly damaged and will be the first area to be repaired, Pritchart said, the trees will be replaced by others with deeper roots that will not displace the concrete, he added.

Councilwoman Nell Mirels suggested that residents be contacted before tree removal begins to determine community support for the plan. The council will review the proposal and citizens responses at its meeting Jan. 27.
