Dissident Kiowa Indians who had taken over tribal headquarters near Carnegie, Okla., left after a two-day protest when an election they opposed was canceled, federal and tribal officials said. The vote to select a new tribal chairman was called off because of faulty ballots, said a tribe member from temporary headquarters. Herschel Sahmaunt, who had been elected chairman in June but later was ruled ineligible to serve, left the tribal compound with about 50 followers who had camped with him there since Thursday. Officials said no decision had been made whether to file charges.
