San Diego State Notebook : Aztecs Want Date With the Big Ten

November 05, 1986|STEVE DOLAN | Times Staff Writer

SAN DIEGO — Fred Miller, San Diego State's athletic director, has been attempting to negotiate a football contract with Minnesota. Little did he know that the Aztecs already have a commitment to play Minnesota.

"Because our files were somewhat in disarray, I just found out we have a two-year contract with Minnesota," Miller said. "We're negotiating for two more years."

The Aztecs will play Minnesota at home in 1993 and away in 1994. Miller said he is negotiating for games in 1996 and 1999.

In addition, SDSU is negotiating to play Illinois, another Big Ten team.

"We want Big Ten opponents," Miller said. "I want schools that play at night. That puts us in the path of pay TV."

Although offensive tackle Mike Ariey will miss the remainder of the season following knee ligament surgery, the rest of SDSU's offensive line is progressing after injuries. Center Kevin Wells (knee), guard Mark Tegio (knee) and tackle Greg Williamson (ankle) were also hurt in Saturday's 27-26 victory at Colorado State.

"I don't anticipate anybody being out for Wyoming (Nov. 15) other than Mike Ariey," Trainer Don Kaverman said. "Maybe Mark Tegio, too, because he has a first-degree knee sprain. We think we can bring it around within a couple of weeks."

Fullback Corey Gilmore (sprained ankle, knee contusion) and wide receiver Monty Gilbreath (shoulder) are also expected to play against Wyoming.

Aztec Notes

Todd Santos passed for 356 yards against Colorado State, the 10th 300-yard game of his career. Santos, a junior, has passes for more than 300 yards four times this year. . . . Anthony Conyers had a career-high 8 receptions for 153 yards against Colorado State. Conyer's yardage was the most by an Aztec receiver this year. . . . . The Aztecs finished 4-1 on the road, the first time they have won four road games since 1981.
