Death Penalty and Race

November 06, 1986

The startling statistical facts enumerated in your editorial should give pause to the strident advocates of the death penalty.

Certainly the governor of California, who has always favored the death penalty so strongly during his career as attorney general and governor, must be aware of the fact that in some states "the killers of whites were 11 times more likely to be sentenced to death than the killers of blacks."

Deukmejian's continued espousal of the death penalty as it is presently applied makes it appear that he endorses the racial implications of state-sponsored executions.
