COLLEGE Digest : OTHER SPORTS : CSUN Soccer Team Has Nearly Unbeatable Goal at Home

November 06, 1986

The CSUN soccer team's 3-2 victory Wednesday night over Cal Poly Pomona was its 27th in its past 29 home games. The Matadors are ranked No. 2 in Division II.

Joey Kirk of Northridge began the week second in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. in scoring with 35 points, with 12 goals and 11 assists. Pomona's Johnny Lima, with 36 points, was first with 16 goals and four assists.

The Cal State Northridge women's volleyball team has two streaks going. The Lady Matadors, winners of eight in a row, are ranked No. 1 in Division II for the fifth straight week.

Mario Lopez, a junior on the Fresno State basketball team, is a probable starter for the Bulldogs this season. Lopez, a 6-8 forward from Notre Dame High, led Valley College last season in rebounds, scoring and blocked shots.

Valley will play Bakersfield on Nov. 16 at the Sports Arena before a National Basketball Assn. game between the Philadelphia 76ers and the L.A. Clippers. Tickets, normally priced at $12, are available for $9 from Valley Coach Virgil Watson and Athletic Director George Goff.

Cal Lutheran's soccer and women's volleyball teams begin NAIA playoffs this weekend. The soccer team will face Westmont College on Saturday in Santa Barbara.

The volleyball team will open its bid for a berth in the national tournament when it plays Cal Baptist on Friday in Fresno.
