CS Northridge Women Win Twice to Open Volleyball Tournament

November 08, 1986

The Cal State Northridge women's volleyball team rolled through its first two matches Friday in the Premier Tournament at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Lady Matadors, ranked No. 1 among the nation's Division II teams, won pool-play matches against West Texas State, 15-4, 15-3, 15-1, and Cal State Chico, 15-3, 15-10, 15-7.

Attempting to win this tournament for the third straight year, CSUN (27-4) will wind up pool play this morning against No. 16 Northern Colorado.

The quarterfinals will be played this afternoon, with the semifinals and finals scheduled for Sunday.

The 16-team Premier Tournament features seven of the division's top 20 teams, including No. 4 Portland State, two-time defending Division II champion.

Portland State and CSUN have met in the national final each of the last three seasons--CSUN won in 1983 but lost in 1984 and 1985--but have not met in the regular season.
