Camp Pendleton

November 11, 1986

The wife of a U.S. Marine died and two Marines were injured early Monday when the car in which they were driving went out of control on a turn and crashed at Camp Pendleton. Betty Jean Buchanon, 34, was dead on arrival at the Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital, Coroner's Deputy Dan Matticks said.

Buchanon was a passenger in the car, which was driven by a Marine, said Sgt. Art Alejandre, Marine Corps spokesman. The driver of the car, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was listed in guarded condition at the Camp Pendleton hospital, Alejandre said. Another Marine riding in the car, whose name also was withheld, was treated at the hospital and released.
