Southern Section Volleyball : Sotter's Serving Sparks Capo Valley Upset of Wilson

Sophomore Kathleen Sotter's serving helped spark Capistrano Valley High School to an upset of fourth-seeded Long Beach Wilson, 13-15, 15-10, 15-6, 15-8, in a 4-A Southern Section quarterfinal volleyball match Tuesday at Capistrano Valley.

Wilson rallied from a 10-5 deficit to win the first game, 15-13, and the Cougars trailed in the second game, 10-9, when Sotter served six balls for points as Capo Valley won, 15-10.

The Cougars then built 13-3 leads in each of the next two games to win easily.

Capistrano Valley will play Gahr in a semifinal match Thursday. Gahr upset top-seeded Torrance, 16-14, 15-12, 15-2.

In other 4-A quarterfinal matches:

Irvine 3, Notre Dame 1--Cari Delson had 18 kills and Bev Odin had 15 to help the Vaqueros (16-1) advance with a 13-15, 15-4, 15-8, 15-10 victory at Irvine.

Irvine will play Marymount in Thursday's semifinal.

Marymount 3, Dana Hills 0--Marymount defeated Dana Hills, 15-10, 15-13, 15-10, at Los Angeles.

In 5-A:

Port Hueneme 3, Corona del Mar 0--Port Hueneme, seeded second, defeated the Sea Kings, 15-9, 15-9, 15-6, at Corona del Mar. Corona del Mar (14-4) got good performances from Lori Wooten, who had 10 kills, and Lori Sawin, who had nine. Sea King setter Rhonda Schnitger had 32 assists.

In 3-A:

Sunny Hills 3, Colton 0--The Lancers (17-1) defeated Colton 15-8, 15-9, 15-2 at Colton. Marissa Hatchett led Sunny Hills with 18 kills and four blocks. Jill Hendry had six kills and two blocks.

Newport Harbor 3, Laguna Beach 0--Jenny Evans had 17 kills and Tracy Krueger 16 as the Sailors (16-2) defeated Laguna Beach 15-5, 15-7, 15-2, at home. Newport Harbor, Sea View League champions and seeded fourth, eliminated the Artists in a little less than an hour. Setter Sienna Curci had 42 assists. The Sailors will play top-seeded Mira Costa Thursday in a semifinal match.
