Of the nearly 8.7 million American women trying to raise children without husbands, 53% were receiving no help from the children's father, according to a new Census Bureau report. About 3.7 million mothers had not been awarded child support, and another 958,000 women unable to collect their awards, said the report, "Child Support and Alimony: 1983." About 25% of the women without a court award of child support said they did not want the help.
