Firefighter in Sex Poses Reinstated

November 16, 1986|Associated Press

RIALTO, Calif. — A firefighter who was dismissed because he posed for pictures in a sex magazine has been ordered reinstated by a judge. Fire Capt. Joe King also must be given back pay, Superior Court Judge Ben Kayashima ruled Friday.

Although King was elated by the decision, City Atty. Scott MacLatchie said the case is not closed and the City Council may appeal.

King and his wife appeared in several sexually explicit photographs in a pictorial on group sex in an 1985 issue of Velvet magazine. Fire Chief Roger Purdie, who was acting city administrator at the time, termed King's conduct indecent and fired him in September, 1985. Purdie said King's conduct affected the good order and operations of the fire station and was a violation of the department's code of ethics.
