President L. Donald Shields of Southern Methodist University, suffering from diabetes and facing increased pressure from allegations about the school's football program, announced his immediate resignation.

Shields, who took the SMU post in 1980 after 10 years as president of Cal State Fullerton, said his decision was in response to medical advice and had nothing to do with allegations of cash payments and illegal inducements for athletes.
