The State

November 23, 1986

Four University of California, Berkeley, football players accused of sexually attacking an 18-year-old freshman would be reprimanded and forced to perform university service under a pending settlement, the San Francisco Examiner reported. The settlement, which won't be final unless university officials sign it, would not prevent the athletes from continuing to play football, said Athletic Director Dave Maggard. The Alameda County district attorney's office has refused to prosecute the football players, whose names haven't been released, because of a lack of evidence. Under the proposed settlement, the athletes must write apologies to the victim, must relocate from the dormitory where the attack allegedly occurred and must undergo counseling, the newspaper reported.
