The World : Rhine Suffers Toxic Spill

Two tons of acid weed killer leaked into the Rhine River after an accident at a West German chemical company, environmental officials reported. BASF AG of Ludwigshafen reported that more than two tons of dichlorphenoxy acid had entered the Rhine on Friday through the plant's cooling system after a leak. Environmental officials in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia said they had told local waterworks to stop using the Rhine for processing into drinking water because of the accident. Recently, the river suffered extensive pollution from toxic spills in Switzerland.
