Israel Won't Release Demjanjuk

November 24, 1986|Associated Press

JERUSALEM — An Israeli Supreme Court judge today rejected an appeal to release John Demjanjuk, a retired U.S. auto worker accused of Nazi war crimes, clearing the way for his trial to begin Wednesday.

Mark O'Connor, Demjanjuk's attorney, refused a prosecution offer to delay the trial by two months. He did not explain his decision, even though he has said he needed more time to prepare the defense. Demjanjuk, a former Cleveland resident, is the first person to be tried on Nazi war crimes in Israel in 25 years.
