November 24, 1986

Poway and Francis Parker high schools will be host to first-round matches of the California State girls' volleyball championships Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Poway, which defeated Sweetwater, 3-0, for the San Diego Section 3-A title, plays host to No. 6 Roosevelt (13-3) of the City Section in the large school Division I bracket. Poway (31-1) is seeded fourth.

Top-seeded Francis Parker (27-2), which won its second straight section 1-A title by defeating Calipatria, plays host to No. 4 Flintridge-Sacred Heart of Los Angeles in the small school Division III bracket.

Section 2-A champion University (20-4), seeded fourth, travels to top-seeded Nordoff of Ojai (15-0) in a Division II match. Nordoff has been a stumbling block for area schools in the Division II playoffs. Nordoff defeated San Diego Section representative La Jolla the last two years in the first round.

Sweetwater (30-2), the section 3-A runner-up, plays at La Jolla (20-3), the section 2-A runner-up, Monday at 3 p.m. with the winner traveling to play No. 1 Mira Costa (19-0) in a Division I match.

In other first-round matches in Division I: No. 5 Hueneme (17-1) plays at No. 3 Palisades (14-3), and No. 7 Hoover of Fresno plays at No. 2 Gahr (19-0). In Division II play, No. 3 Thousand Oaks (17-4) plays at No. 2 Yosemite (17-0). Avenal plays at second-seeded Brentwood of Los Angeles in a Division III match.
