Envoy Said to Have Defected

November 25, 1986|United Press International

BONN — A West German human rights organization said today a Chinese diplomat and his wife have defected and asked for asylum in West Germany.

The Frankfurt-based International Society for Human Rights identified them as Tu Bingru, first secretary at the Chinese Embassy in Bonn, and his wife, Zhu Meilan.

The human rights organization said the diplomat defected because "he long ago rejected China's Communist system."

A spokesman at the Chinese Embassy refused comment on the report.
