The World : Palestinians Driven Back

November 26, 1986

Thousands of Shia Muslim militiamen were locked in house-to-house combat with Palestinian guerrillas for control of Maghdousheh, a hilltop town in southern Lebanon. Police said there were dozens of casualties. They said Shia Amal militiamen stormed back into the town and retook two thirds of it and most of the surrounding bluffs, after losing ground Monday, in the Palestine Liberation Organization's largest operation in southern Lebanon since the Israeli invasion in June, 1982.
