November 27, 1986

The Franklin High football team is off this week after overcoming a 24-point deficit to beat top-seeded Canoga Park, 28-24, last Friday in the City Section 3-A playoffs.

The playoffs resume Dec. 5 with Franklin (8-2) playing at Palisades (6-3-1).

Against Canoga Park, Franklin quarterback Ricky Lopez missed on his first 11 passing attempts but hit 12 of his next 17 for 229 yards and three touchdowns.

Occidental College sophomore Michele Trimble finished seventh at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships last week at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Occidental's Cresey Stewart, a senior, finished 13th in the competition that was run at below-freezing temperatures and with six inches of snow on the ground. This is the first time the Occidental women have had two All-Americans in the same year. Trimble and Stewart ran as individual. Occidental did not field a women's team.

The Occidental men's team finished 20th. Sophomore Tim Demme finished 85th out of 184 competitors.

St. Thomas College of Minnesota won the men's and women's team titles.

Occidental College soccer players Sal Mota and Blair Johnson were named to the first all-star team of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by conference coaches.

Mota and Johnson helped lead Oxy to a 9-8-1 record overall and a 7-4-1 second-place finish in conference.

The Occidental water polo team will compete this weekend in the SCIAC championships at Claremont.

Occidental (4-3) will play Redlands, Claremont and Pomona in the two-day tournament that begins Saturday at 9 a.m.
