Having subscribed to the Utne Reader in the past I can recommend it as a good source of information for anyone making a study of America's dissident community--and it is, as the sub-headline of Clancy's article suggests, "Magazine for 'Leftists and New Agers."'
Eric Utne himself once observed correctly, and pointed out in a Dear Reader letter: "If you rely solely on the mass media for your news, you might believe that . . . all those who were committed to change in the '60s and '70s have joined Wall Street, found Jesus or simply faded away. It's not true . . . What the mainstream press doesn't understand is that the counter-culture was the seed of an emerging culture that is now quietly and steadily transforming every institution in the land. And the central nervous system of this culture--the alternative press--is reporting, documenting and encouraging these changes with more impact than the conventional press has yet realized . . . " A fact of which conservatives have long been aware.
