Brazilian Is New Dean of College of Cardinals

December 21, 1986|Associated Press

VATICAN CITY — Brazilian-born Cardinal Agnelo Rossi has been chosen dean of the Roman Catholic College of Cardinals, the Vatican announced Saturday.

The 73-year-old prelate succeeds Italian-born Cardinal Carlo Confalonieri, who died Aug. 1, in the largely ceremonial post.

The dean represents cardinals at various Vatican functions and helps run the church's central administration during the interim period after one Pope dies and before another is chosen.
