France--Marvin L. Taff, Los Angeles: "During our last trip we discovered the Chateau Accueil group of private chateaux operated by owners, offering accommodations on a personal basis. At Chateau Boussac, Target, 03140 Chantelle (Allier), (near Vichy), a beautiful, 17th-Century castle surrounded by a moat and reflecting lake, we were the only non-family guests of Marquis and Marquise Hugues and Helen de Longueil. Almost everyone spoke English, conversation stimulating, food superb. We stayed in two-room suite with grand piano, two fireplaces, modern bathroom. All-inclusive price $270 one night. At Chateau Caillan, 34550 Bessan (Herault), (near Montpelliere) paid $120 for room, two meals for two. Met California representative, Beraud de Vogue, who can be reached in Visalia, Calif., at (209) 733-7119."

Austria--Linda Adams, Laguna Niguel: "Enjoyed fall visit to Salzburg, much enhanced by stay at Tannhof, four-star hotel-pension 10 minutes from city center. Impeccably run by Walter and Paul Hoffman, a country-styled house with modern facilities and parking. $55 double with bath. Address is A-5020 Salzburg, Gaisbergstrasse 14a, (062) 222-13500."

Switzerland--George Hermann Hodos, Sherman Oaks: "If you want to choose a central hotel in Zurich, near lake and opera but still quiet with luxury comfort and service with medium prices, try Ambassador Hotel, Falkenstrasse 6, 8008 Zurich. For two about $120, excellent breakfast included."

Maine--Mrs. Janet Emery, Long Beach: Recommends Clefstone Manor, Route 3, Eden Street, Bar Harbor 04609. "Best-ever B&B. Mrs. Jackson a delightful hostess who serves buffet breakfast, afternoon tea, with sandwiches, scones, cheese and wine in evening. Inn filled with antiques. Room had fireplace, sitting room, down comforter. Rate for this suite, Hampton Court, $200 a day. Other rooms at around $50."

Alaska--Mrs. Mary Rice, Oceanside: B&B run by Mrs. Virginia Graham, 2516 Susitna Drive, Anchorage 99517, phone (907) 243-3892. Five minutes from airport, 10 minutes from downtown. Bus service. For $175 went on tour of side streets, alleys, out-of-the-way places a tourist could never find. In three days I was able to finish furnishing and accessorizing my new home. More important, purchases were at my front door within two months in perfect condition.
