Hearing Set in AIDS Bias Case

December 25, 1986

A hearing date has been set in in the case of a nail salon accused of violating the city's AIDS discrimination ordinance.

Monday, the city will present its case against Jessica's Nail Clinic, whose owner, Jessica Vartoughian, was charged with violating the discrimination ordinance for refusing to schedule a pedicure for a hairdresser who has acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Joseph B. Copelan, an attorney for the salon, has claimed that the charges resulted from an attempt to damage Vartoughian's business.

Conviction for violating the ordinance is a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. The hearing will be held in Beverly Hills Municipal Court.
