El Monte : Home for Statue on Agenda

January 01, 1987

The Parks and Recreation Commission will meet Jan. 12 to vote on a recommendation for a permanent home for a 23-foot-high replica of the Statue of Liberty donated to the city last July.

The statue, which now is being stored in a city public works yard, was a gift from local physician and was featured in the city's 1986 Fourth of July festivities.

Flair Business Park and the now-closed Twin Lakes Golf Course, both along the San Bernardino Freeway, are among the sites the commission is considering.

David Waterman, assistant parks and recreation director, said the city wants to display the half-ton statue in a highly visible location.
