January 01, 1987|Associated Press

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Scott Hicks scored 14 points, and David Rivers and Donald Royal added 13 each, as Notre Dame halted a brief Maryland rally to defeat the Terrapins, 63-50, Wednesday night for its sixth straight victory.

Notre Dame (6-2) held a 42-31 edge in rebounds as Maryland (3-1) played the final 26 minutes without center Derrick Lewis, its leading rebounder and scorer who sprained an ankle late in the first half.

After leading, 28-19, at halftime, the Irish stretched their advantage to 46-31 with 7:43 remaining before John Johnson sparked a Maryland rally.

Johnson sank two shots from three-point range, and Greg Nared added another to pull the Terrapins within 52-45 before Notre Dame ran off nine consecutive points.
