The Yukon government of Canada issued a stern warning to the U.S. government, declaring that American plans to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil development are "unacceptable." A representative of all 6,000 Yukon Territory Indians also spoke against the plan to a U.S. Department of Interior panel meeting in Anchorage, Alaska. The decision on oil development in the refuge is up to Congress. Environmental groups spoke out against oil development while major oil companies and industry groups voiced support for the proposal.
