January 14, 1987|United Press International

PEKING — A Shanghai writer today became the first "bourgeois liberal" to be expelled from the Communist Party in a mounting campaign against capitalist tendencies that diplomats said may topple party chief Hu Yaobang.

The official New China News Agency said Wang Ruowang, an outspoken critic of the government since 1979, was expelled by the party's Shanghai Municipal Disciplinary Inspection Commission.
