Dennis Burbank, a 6-foot 5-inch center, scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds to lead Valencia High School to a 51-45 Orange League victory over Magnolia Wednesday night at Valencia.
Valencia (1-0, 11-3) trailed at halftime, 30-22, but outscored the Sentinels, 10-2, in the third quarter to tie the score at 32-32.
The Tigers pulled away midway through the fourth quarter, outscoring Magnolia, 11-4. Magnolia got no closer than four points at 46-42. Valencia free throws in the game's final minutes preserved the victory.
Magnolia (0-1, 10-4) was plagued by poor shooting, making only 6 of 26 second-half shots. Mark Lyon and Mike Goff were the only Magnolia players to score field goals in the half. Goff finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out with 53 seconds left. Lyon added 12 points.
