U.S.-Mongolia Ties Discussed

January 16, 1987|Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The State Department said today the United States is moving toward an agreement to establish diplomatic relations with Mongolia, an Asian ally of the Soviet Union and one of the most secretive countries in the world.

State Department spokesman Charles E. Redman said "we are having discussions with Mongolia about normalizing relations. We are hopeful these discussions will end with the establishment of relations between our two countries in the near future." Back in the 1970s, the two nations were close to establishing relations but the talks broke down because of pressure on Mongolia by the Soviets.
