January 23, 1987|Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS — The head of the Minnesota National Guard today ordered an investigation into the use of fire hoses on about 300 demonstrators who turned out in subzero temperatures to protest Guard missions to Central America.

"It was ruthless," Dan Greenburg, 23, of Minneapolis said of the hosing Thursday night as temperatures dipped to minus 2 degrees, with a wind chill factor of 36 below zero, at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. No injuries were reported. Adjutant Gen. James Sieben, commander of the Minnesota National Guard, said today he has requested an investigation of the incident, according to an advisory from the governor's office.
