'Contadora Can Work, if--'

January 25, 1987

I appreciate your continuing editorials to promote Contadora, the only viable non-military solution to the conflicts in Central America.

The Contadora nations (Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela) and their support group (Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Uruguay) have worked unceasingly since 1983 to bring about a lasting peace in Central America by addressing the social and economic root causes of the conflicts as well as the shooting wars. Their new initiatives this month with U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar and the secretary general of the Organization of American States, Joao Baena Soares, will strengthen the negotiations.

Thank you for your support of Contadora, and I join you in urging support by all Americans and their elected representatives.
