MORNING REPORT

Stage

January 26, 1987| Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

In the revisionist theater department, a Chinese director in Shanghai has decided Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" doesn't have enough punch, the China Daily newspaper reported Friday. In the original play, Williams wrote no definite conclusion about the fate of the characters, so Zhang Yingxiang of the Shanghai Drama Institute wrote his own ending. "In it, the father stumbles painfully over the stage and takes a last, despairing look at his fertile fields, and Maggie stares into space after her husband falls into complete madness," the paper reported. "This leaves more for the audience to think about," the director was quoted as saying.
