FOLSOM, Calif. — An inmate serving time for robbery, burglary and multiple sex crimes briefly took a guard hostage Sunday at Folsom state prison, prison officials said.

Prison spokesman Lt. T. J. Smith said Daniel Hernandez, 30, took the officer hostage in the law library, apparently in an attempt to get the guard's uniform.

"Hernandez apparently wanted the officer's uniform in an attempt to walk out of the prison dressed as an officer to effect his escape," Smith said.

After about 15 minutes, the officer was able to summon help and Hernandez was restrained and put in administrative segregation, Smith said.

He said the incident was under investigation by the prison staff and the Sacramento County district attorney's office.

Smith did not explain how Hernandez allegedly took the officer hostage. Hernandez, from San Diego County, is serving a 40-year, eight-month sentence.
