Six Westside residents were among 38 former U.S. Olympians honored at a Los Angeles reception launching the campaign to raise $2.6 million in Southern California for the 1988 Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
The honorees included Anita De Frantz of Santa Monica, David Saunders of Pacific Palisades, Candy Costie-Burke and husband Doug Burke of Playa del Rey, Herbert Wildeman of Marina del Rey and Harold Connolly of Venice.
De Frantz, recently elected to the International Olympic Committee board, won a bronze medal for rowing in 1976. Saunders was a member of the 1984 gold medalist volleyball team. Costie-Burke was a 1984 gold medalist in synchronized swimming pairs.
Doug Burke was on the 1984 silver medalist water polo team. Wildeman played on the 1932 and 1936 water polo teams. Connolly, a gold medalist in the hammer throw in 1956, was on four Olympic teams, the last time in 1968.
