A 57-year-old man was killed and two companions were injured Saturday when they were struck by a car as they crossed Orange Avenue in downtown Coronado.

The injured were a 47-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, who were taken by Life Flight helicopter to UC San Diego Medical Center. Both were listed in fair condition. Their names were not available. Both were described as friends of the dead man.

Coronado police were investigating the accident, which occurred in the 1500 block of Orange Avenue--near the Hotel del Coronado--at 1:31 p.m. The name of the driver, who was not held, was not released.

The vehicle was traveling south on Orange when it struck the victims, who were crossing the street at the same time, police said. Traffic on Orange, a major thoroughfare, was stopped for 45 minutes as police awaited the arrival of a Lifeflight helicopter.
